Imagine standing in front of glass door without a hint if you should push or pull on the left or on the right to open it. There are four possibilities. A plate plate a the right of the door would be an affordance to push the door at the right side, whilst a handle would be an affordance to pull the door. (This example is from Don Norman's 'The Design of Everyday Things'.)
