Or, file A can maintain bookmarks for nodes in a dozen different files,
a central index of nodes of interest.

The prize would be a tree with pointers to the last N nodes in order of
modification time.

For the time being, I'd maintain the index manually, eventually fetching
it from some sort of database populated by the node timestamp code
I've been working on.
