Well then, something's busted...not entirely surprising given shadow's recent run of brown paper bag releases. The original command that triggered this specifies a gid on the command-line, so shadow shouldn't care what the default gid is in /etc/default/useradd. And as for caring about it when the only command-line option is '--help', that's just sloppy.

Is anyone in contact with upstream? If so, could they perhaps put a bit of pressure on them to get a patch merged for the big problem we saw in shadow-4.0.18.1 (see #1850 for an explanation and pointer to a couple of candidate patches).

Also, in future, would folks please respond to Trac ticket messages in Trac itself, rather than via the lfs-book mailing list. It just makes things easier to track (pun sadly intended) if the whole discussion is in one place.
