 With a group of 1000, and omitting the sed to remove GROUP= from
 /etc/useradd, I now get no warning messages.  The user was created in
 group 1001, dunno if that is what you guys expected ?  I certainly didn't.

 # useradd defaults file
 GROUP=1000
 HOME=/home
 INACTIVE=-1
 EXPIRE=
 SHELL=/bin/bash
 SKEL=/etc/skel
 CREATE_MAIL_SPOOL=no

 'useradd -g users' works ok.
