Yes, you will find it easiest if you "delete" the hard drive. That would actually be re-partitioning and re-formatting to be totally correct about it.
You could download and burn the LFS live CD and boot from that to prepare the system and do the LFSing. Otherwise, you will want to download something like Ubuntu or some other Linux distribution and install that and part of the install will be the partitioning/formatting.
