Hello,

I'm new at this so if someone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I have no idea how to start. I have an old computer with Windows 98 on it. I also have a laptop which is what I use. I would like to do the Linux thing on my old computer. I have basic programming knowledge but what do I need on both computers in order to do this. Do I have to like delete the hard drive on the old computer? If so how do I do this. I know this is a lot of questions but I would love some help.

Thanks Chris

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you have to start with questions
like this, you are going to have to learn a LOT! If you are up for that,
than there are no worries ofcourse. LFS is for learning after all.

You're best off with a liveCD (a recent one, like Knoppix 4.*), a
network between your two machines at all times, and ofcourse a constant
internet connection, so you can access google.

Find out what gpm is (a mouse deamon) and make it work on your build
system, before even starting to read the LFS book. You will hate
yourself later if you don't offer yourself the luxury of its copy and
paste option. Seriously, it is extremely time saving.

You might do yourself a great favor by making sure you don't need your
win98 installation anymore. It is easy to kill your master boot record,
which is not generally a problem, unless you don't know how to repair
it. In other words, get an internet connection on both machines.

Good luck!

Warren
