Success!!
Other than messing up ncurses, which I found when I tried to compile psmisc, and a kernel-panic, everything went well. I went back at psmisc and recompiled ncurses which fixed that issue, I must have missed a line between terminal screens. Recompiled the kernel using mostly defaults and it's up and running. I purposely skipped over Grub as this is setup to dual boot and grub is already on the other system. I sincerely appreciate all the suggestions and take all of them to heart. Thank you Doug, Daniel, Richard, Ken and Kyle. Next stop BLFS after some much needed rest. What the LFS book requests is to replace the default link /bin/sh -> /bin/dash on Debian systems with a link /bin/sh -> /bin/bash.
