I don't think there are many windows users who monitor this list. This applies to those who purchased equipment loaded with Win 8. I don't know for sure, but it probably applies to machines that come with Win 8.1.

I upgraded (?) to Win 8.1 about a month ago. I thought it odd that I couldn't get my Grub or gummiboot menu when I rebooted, but I thought, "I can fix it later." Just two days ago, and verified last night and this morning, that Win 8.1, regardless of what one does to change the boot order, even installing distros like Ubuntu, et al, who have paid microsoft for Secure Boot Keys, changes the boot order back to windows and boots from an internal windows image.

On my HP, I can press F9 at boot time and I get to select all the entries for booting that I established. But I want to default to the LFS-Grub menu that I created. I can still get to what I want, but I can't do it by default, which is my desire.

To avoid this, the solution is not to use Win 8.1.

The only reason I use windows at all is for iTunes. I know that I can make sure that I've backed up all my LFS and Ubuntu partitions--and my iTunes files--and use the HP recovery set that I made when I bought this thing. I'll have to repartion the hard drive again, and re-install all my linux stuff. This seems like a lot to do just for a cell phone and a tablet, but.....

Bruce, a month or so ago you said that one of your students bought a lenovo and couldn't disable Secure Boot. I obviously take you at your word. Now I'm wondering if it wasn't a Win 8.1 thing. I have Secure Boot disabled in my BIOS settings, but I can't boot anywhere but windows by default.

I really didn't know last year when I got this laptop that I could build LFS on a Mac. If I had, that's what I would have gotten and wouldn't be posting this to the list. Oh well.
