I finally dumped the 3.10.62 kernel, restored 3.5.2, and patched that half-way, to 3.8. The USB noise is all gone. 8-) Probably going to advance another step, but not sure where.
But I've noticed the v3 kernels flash the front-panel's "IDE" led once a second. I don't know if they're actually hitting the HD. Is this normal behavior? I haven't seen that before.
