The error was:
   No such file or directory
Here is a sampling from the terminal:

lfs@debian:~$ cd $sources
lfs@debian:/mnt/lfs/sources$ ls gmp-6.0.0a.tar.xz mkdir test
bash: /tools/bin/ls: No such file or directory
lfs@debian:/mnt/lfs/sources$ mkdir test
bash: /tools/bin/mkdir: No such file or directory
lfs@debian:/mnt/lfs/sources$ cp gmp /tmp/
bash: /tools/bin/cp: No such file or directory
lfs@debian:/mnt/lfs/sources$ tar -xf gmp-6.0.0a.tar.xz
bash: /tools/bin/tar: No such file or directory
lfs@debian:/mnt/lfs/sources$ ls /mn/lfs/tools
bash: /tools/bin/ls: No such file or directory
