And any recent version of tar should be able to extract .xz, .lzma,
.bz2 or .gz tar files without decompressing the tarball first, so

tar -xf /sources/something.tar.xz [ or tar -xvf to watch it. ]

But you still need the relevant programs for tar to invoke.
