as far as I know the civil was was not "defensive" war, and if the north took the current libertarian view that only retaliatory action takes place then blacks would still be slaves today. you could define slavery as "offense" but thats just playing with words.
the south was just minding its own business, just like sadaam was just minding his own business. for that matter with the current libertarian platform you wouldnt have a president you would still have the queen as head of state. the reality is that the US has been aggressively exporting liberty and freedom, both internally and externally since its birth.
