Patrick Henry was an anti-federalist. He was also the first elected
governor in America. He was elected governor of VA in 1776. Prior to
that all governors of all the American colonies were appointed by
the king. Lord Dunmore, the last royal governor of VA left
Williamsburg in 1775 and never returned. He left to fight Indians in
what is now Kentucky. As governor he was the commander in chief of
VA. He was not able to return to Williamsburg because of the
political climate. The king appointed him governor of Bahamas next.
He was the governor of NY prior to becomming the governor of VA.
Ironically, there was an incident in which Dunmore issued an arrest
waraant for Patrick Henry prior to Dunmore's leave of VA.
Col. George Mason did not sign the Constitution. He left the
convention early and was opposed to the Constitution. George Wythe
might have signed it but he left early and returned to Williamsburg
because his wife became ill. I have been in George Wythe's house
several times. Gen. Washington used it as his headquarters during
the Battle of Yorktown. Yorktown is just up the road a bit from
Williamsburg. George Washington actually did sleep in the Wythe
house.
