_Cato On John Stossel's 20/20 Special_ (http://www.cato.org/homepage_item.php?id=154) This Friday, ABC will air a special hour of _John Stossel's_ (http://abcnews.go.com/2020/News/story?id=446) "Give Me a Break," featuring a sharp look into Stossel's 10 favorite myths. Stossel's number one myth is based on the Cato book _It's Getting Better All the Time_ (http://www.catostore.org/index.asp?fa=ProductDetails&pid=144636&method=search&t=&a=moore&k=&aeid=59&adv=&pg=) , by _Stephen Moore_ (http://www.cato.org/people/moore.html) and Julian L. Simon. The 20/20 special will air at 10 p.m. In their book, Moore and Simon state the case that more human progress has been achieved in the last 100 years than in all of the previous centuries combined. No matter what the variable -- life expectancy, wealth, leisure time, education, safety, gender and racial equality, freedom -- the world is a vastly better place today than it was a century ago. "Never before have quality of life improvements been spread to virtually every segment of the population as has happened in the United States in this century," the authors point out. Because natural resources have become increasingly available throughout history, and because productivity keeps increasing, there is apparently "no fixed limit on our resources in the future," they note. "There are limits at any moment, but the limits continually expand, and constrain us less with each passing generation."
