Some years ago my then wife and I knew a nice young woman - very pretty, very
kind at heart. She had alot of personal troubles and did not pick her men well.
Well, the last one she picked got her into heroin, and one night while out on a
drug deal with him they were both brutally, and, for her, slowly murdered by a
drug dealer they were attempting to buy from.

Did that change my mind on the drug war? Did I suddenly decide that all drugs
are intrinsicly evil and that we should throw more money and more resources and
more lives at the drug war? Should we put to death all dealers and perhaps even
hard core users? Hell no - if we didn't have our drug laws, there would be no
tremendous profits to be made by the most violent in our society and my friend
might well be alive today. Even if she were hooked on heroin, at least it would
be cheap and clean and not the dangerous stuff that's cut with all sorts of
chemicals and kills people over time.

I feel the same way about 9/11. Why is it that the terrorists are attacking
us? Is it because they "hate freedom"? No, it's because of western intervention
in the Middle East over the last 100 years. I will grant that I find Islam
somewhat worrisome in it's treatment of non-Muslims and that we should be on
guard against religious extremism and any demands that Islamists or others put
on our legal system.

  So Steve, question.

Would your attitude be different if you had had a friend or relative
who died in the Twin Towers, at the Pentagon, or on the 4 airplanes
on 9/11?
