I would even contest your statement that a mercenary force is not a good solution. It is a good solution and a perfectly libertarian one. A draft is slavery. NO ONE has a greater claim on my time or freedom or liberty than I do. That is an absolute. To say that a draft is necessary is the same argument that the proponents of slavery used and it is just as wrong. If you can't get enough people to defend something voluntarily, then maybe it is not worth defending in the first place.
