This is like trying to do mathematics by understanding the "gist" of it. Math 
has something to do with numbers, right?

And like trying to navigate the globe using common sense. The world is flat, 
right?

There are many concepts in economics (and physics and statistics as well) that 
defy common sense. The purpose of science is to find the truth through 
hypothesis, analysis, experimentation, and observation. The obvious is often 
wrong.
