Trevor,

So Paul's take on the issue of programming these things is the Peripheral
Template Library, its on github at
https://github.com/pfalcon/PeripheralTemplateLibrary. So understand he has
a horse in this particular race.

So there are at least three different forces at play here, one is market
forces, where design wins are very very valuable. One is technical forces
where different sides appeal to different aspects of the technology. And
one is the accessible market. Historically in the "dev board" space the
manufacturers have kept things very proprietary.

These days however to get widespread adoption you need to be very open with
your drivers/low level code and ST is kind of getting the hint there. Atmel
still seems a bit behind, which is strange to me given the success they had
with that on the AVR series, their SAM series is still quite encumbered.

And this of course is the funny bit. You do something long enough and give
it away hard enough and "suddenly" it becomes successful because it is
accessible to a wide range of people. We used to argue about Mecchano
(Erector Sets) and Lego in college about which was "better" (clearly
Mechanno because you could build more durable structures and machines) but
Lego "won" the war because it was more accessible. Arduino is accessible
and that is pretty important.
