The GNU coding standards appear to be rather C(++)-specific, what about using 
the PEAR standards [1] instead?  Then tools like PHP CodeSniffer {c,sh}ould be 
used to verify code quality.

Anyway, as far as I can say, I find the current source code rather ugly and 
discouraging people from contributing.  I suppose that Laconica is a fine 
example of how to get it done significantly better (actually, why not to use 
their library as well?).
