if it is called "Friends" the handshake is a must. i dont want to be someones friend whom i dont know. for following along the RSS feed is already there. if you call it "Subscription" (like http://thesixtyone.com does), then it can be asymmetric. they (61) also expose both directions, called watchers/subscribers and subscriptions. so the semantics dictate the functionality for me. the type of relation can be important for some, but if so, have one "do nothing" tag, which, well, tells nothing about the type of relation. i'd prefer not to make a difference. generic "friend" is okay, as anyone sees it differently anyway. after all this is about music and not a dating place or facebook or XING. notification as you said.. for symmetric a must, but i would even do it if its going to be a subscription type.
