And, by locale we have adjusted the font defaults as new or preferred fonts have emerged for those user communities when requested. Also true we have not updated the set of fonts for en locale(s) nor the LATIN_TEXT font lists--retaining the rather outdated Liberation font equivalents. The Liberation Font family sponsored frist by RedHat for metric equivs to MS fonts, and then by Google for the Croscore Font family became what LibreOffice now deploys as Liberation Fonts version 2, under SIL Open Font license. Liberation Serif (ex. Tinos) <--> Times New Roman Liberation Sans (ex. Arimo ) <--> Arial Liberation Sans Narrow <--> Arial Narrow Liberation Mono (ex. Cousine) <--> Courier New IIUC with some movement became Liberation Fonts v2 that merged the two under SIL license. LibreOffice does bundle the Google sponsored CrosExtra Font family as metric equivs to popular MS fonts: Caladea <--> Cambria [serif] Carlito <--> Calibri [san-serif] But neither of these was added to the .XCU default font lists, though Carlito would have been appropriate when MS moved to Calibri as default font for Word in Office 2007. Meanwhile MS has moved on from Calibri to Aptos (in both its Sans-serif as default, and also a Serif offering). In truth, the LibreOffice .XCU default font sequence for en and LATIN_TEXT was last tweaked back in 2013 [1]. Reality is LibreOffice is no longer equivalent with what MS uses by default, and since we can't deliver either Aptos flavor, maintaining a serif styled font by default, with equivs to an legacy TNR serif font for "metric equivelancy" does not really make sense. There is a snag, with the SubstFonts and SubstFontsMS framework used with import and export filters that have languished as well, and there is some technical debt build up around our continued use of the Libreation fonts--and a move to Noto, or Carlito, or even allowing an os/DE test could cause export/import filter issues. Meanwhile, users have the ability to modify the .XCU as Regina noted or of creating ODF document templates. And users can already choose to use an instance of Aptos font they individually download [2], and *that* can help assure interoperability of OOXML or ODF when shared.
