In words the expected result is like this: When the author information is not shown because the checkbox in "LibreOffice - Options - LibreOfficeDev Calc - View - Comment Authorship" is NOT selected, the width of the comment should be the same as when editing the comment by rightclicking the cell with the comment and choosing "Edit comment" or "Show comment". Please note that this should be tested with a comment that is not editied to be too wide preferably use the suggested width when creating a new comment as the example image does. When the author information is shown because the checkbox in "LibreOffice - Options - LibreOfficeDev Calc - View - Comment Authorship" is selected the width of the comment should expand horizontally so that author and time information can fit on one line to not get row breaks in the shown author and time information. This I think is the behaviour that most people would like. Personally I would not mind if line 917 in source file ~/libreoffice/sc/source/core/data/postit.cxx was deleted completely so that the width of the comment never can be expanded horizontally but that would make the author and time information line break when shown and that would look ugly for most people I think. The reason this is important to me is that comments conflict with "Freeze Rows and Column"-lines that are activated from the "View"-menu and they also conflict with form controls like push buttons and I have a lot of them in my spread sheets. Because of this other bug I have made the width of some comments more narrow so that a comment is still readable when hoovered close to a push button and not covered up by the push button. Bug 45085 — the original report about comments being covered by other on-screen elements — has been open for a very long time (a bug number that low dates to roughly the early 2010s). In March 2024 someone filed it again as Bug 150592 ("Comments should be shown over all form controls (eg push button)"), and it was simply marked a duplicate of the original 45085 rather than fixed.
