Bug ID: 174038
Summary: Sidebar too easy to undock, then can't be docked
again, user should be able to permanently block
undocking
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.8.0.3 release
Hardware: All
OS: Windows (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: UI
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
The sidebar apparently has easy move mode on, so user can easily and most often
accidently drag it by clicking on an empty space inbetween controls and drop it
ever so slightly away so that it gets undocked.
At that point there is still this decades old by now bug which prevents the
sidebar to be docked back. No amount of draging it to the edge of the screen or
to that special pixel-perfect location somewhere ever works, nor does
CTRL+SHIFT+F10 work, nor does the hamburger menu command for docking/undocking
work.
Once the sidebar is undocked, it's over, you have to save and close all you
work and restart the ENTIRE soffice application including each and every other
opened documents, regardless inside which app you got the sidebar undocked.
This is ridiculously irritating and makes me NOT want to use the sidebar at
all. However, given the fact, that to this day, LibreOffice can't stick with
one type of UI and do it right, instead making a mess of toolbars for some
commands, even if you choose to use tabbed interface. Of course tabbed ui can't
be modified, so good luck using your most usefull commands without any
additional toolbar.
Same with the sidebar. Both new concepts are good in theory however the
execution is so bad. You can't change anything, and thus if something is
missing there you HAVE to rely on toolbars. And now, because of those
unresolved bugs - the unnecessary easy move by clicking and dragging empty
space of the sidebar, and the fact you can't then dock it back, or the fact you
can't lock it permanently so use can't have any way of undocking it ever, makes
me want to to never ever use the sidebar nor the tabbed ui, and just go back to
the good old toolbars.
So, I'm begging you, add an option to completely LOCK THE SIDEBAR so neither
use nor the program itself can EVER undock it. I don't care for the method.
Just stop making me go through that hell of accidently undocking then forcing
each and every document to close, reopen just so I can finally dock the
sidebar.
Or at least remove that stupid, unnecessary, completely useless ability to
easy-move the sidebar by clicking and draging empty space where there are no
controls.
Please, this has to change, or for me the software changes, and I really don't
want that.
Thank you.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open any app.
2. Click the sidebar where it doesn't have controls and drag it a bit until it
undocks itself.
Actual Results:
Sidebar can't be docked without closing each and every opened soffice process
and reopening the app. Dragging sidbar to a place where a docking frame should
activate, doesn't work. No docking frame at all.
Nor does the commands to dock/undock in the humburger menu in the sidebar work.
Nor does the shortcut for that command CTRL+SHIFT+F10 work. It does literally
nothing at this point.
However, once you close each and every document you have opened, and restart
the app, then and ONLY then you can dock the sidebar.
Expected Results:
Sidebar should never undock when dragged by its empty space. Only if the user
clickes the hamburger menu command to undock or hits CTRL+SHIFT+F10 it should
ever undock. Never by mouse click and drag.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: Yes
