I've just reinstalled Win95 on my Libretto 70 - it is reasonably
straightforward as long as you plan the procedure carefully before you
start.
You will need the set of Win95 floppies that came with your Libretto,
and floppies containing drivers for your PCMCIA cards (in particular
network card and/or CD-ROM). You also need the set of floppies with
the Toshiba drivers that came with your Libretto - if you don't have
these, they can be downloaded from http://www.csd.toshiba.com/
The required disks are the C&T display drivers, OPL3-SAx sound driver
and Toshiba Win95 Controls disk (which contains the PCMCIA floppy
driver).
Before destroying your existing installation of Win95, create a Win95
startup disk. Once the new HD is installed, you can boot from this
disk, create and format your partition(s). Note that in order to use a
HD larger than 1.6GB, you need to be using BIOS version 6.20 (not 6.30
or 6.40) - this can again be downloaded from Toshiba's web site.
Now create a directory on the Libretto's HD and copy all the Win95
floppies to it. I find it useful to have the drive partitioned into
two 1GB partitions - then these files can be left intact on D: when
drive C: has to be reinstalled. Also copy the driver disks to the HD.
Once all the required files are on the HD, run the Win95 Setup program
from this directory. Select the Portable installation when prompted,
and when the installation asks whether to search for a CD-ROM drive,
network card or sound card, answer No to all three - it is easier to
install the correct drivers later.
When installation is completed, the graphics and sound card drivers
can be installed in the usual way using the Add New Hardware wizard.
Getting the PC card slot and floppy drive working is a little more
complicated. In Control Panel, double-click the PC Card icon. Windows
will then attempt to enable the PC Card slot, first asking if you are
installing Windows from the floppy drive, and whether you want to
check for any drivers that need to be disabled (answer No in both
cases). On rebooting, the floppy drive should be detected (assuming,
of course, that it is attached) - point Windows to the driver on the
Toshiba Controls disk (which you copied to the HD earlier).
The Toshiba Controls themselves are installed from the Windows Setup
tab of the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet - click the Have
Disk button. There is also a Toshiba Accessories disk - run the Setup
program on the disk to install these.
Finally, the drivers for your other PC cards can be installed - of
course the drivers will need to be copied to the HD before inserting
the PC card, as the floppy drive cannot be fitted at the same time as
any other PC card. Once you have done that you can use the network or
CD-ROM drive to reinstall all your applications and data.
HTH,
David.
