I had forgotten that trick. David's and Arndt's messages, that I was replying
to, didn't mention that essential bit, and I forgot about it myself.
I think we're all agreed: you can indeed partition and format and do
everything for an 8-gig-or-less drive via a desktop, for later use on a
Libretto, as long as you leave the last X megabytes unused, where "X" is a
number like 72.
There's still a couple caveats. My copy of Partition Magic will then refuse
to look at that drive once it's plugged into the Libretto. I would *guess*
(not sure, haven't done the experiment), that if you run Windows NT on your
Libretto, its Disk Administrator will also be upset with the desktop-created
disk layout forever after. It sure was when I went the other direction,
Libretto-to-Desktop, with a drive once. Can't remember whether fdisk is upset
too. Windows is by nature so screwy it's hard to remember all the
unsuccessful experiments that you do.
So, if you lay out on a desktop, you may have to plug the drive back into the
desktop to make any layout changes.
