Subject: Win98 vs Win95 on an L50
I have an admittedly nebulous problem.
My L50 has 32MB of RAM, is overclocked to 100MHz, and has a new 6GB Toshiba drive. I
used to run Win95 on it with DriveSpace compression on my 810MB original drive.
When I upgraded my hard drive, I decided to move to Win98 (with a FAT32). The machine
now feels significantly slower than ever. I expected Win98 to run slower than Win95,
but it is so much slower that I wonder if there's something else wrong. The machine
actually feels slower than it did with Win95's DriveSpace running heavily all the time
(resulting in major disk access).
At first, I handled a driver problem with the Libretto floppy drive. That handled a
HUGE slow waiting for it to sense the floppy drive (which would inevitably fail
anyway). However, it still doesn't feel "right". Now, many times I'll press a button
in a dialog box and I'll have to wait for sometimes more than ten seconds to even see
the button be pressed. During this wait, the hard drive is seldom, if ever, being
accessed. It's not like with Win95 and my old 810MB hard drive (with or without
DriveSpace), where the disk would be accessed furiously if the machine was making me
wait.
I'm hoping someone else has run into this and that there a there's a solution. I
could, of course, go back to Win95 with this new hard drive to see if it's a perculiar
problem with the new hard drive, but I'd rather not have to do this.
Anyone have any experience?
