Subject: HDC error
Hi. Lately I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with a 6GB
8.45mm drive in my L100 running Win98.
The machine will sit there, accessing the HDD slowly. Like read, pause,
read, pause, read, pause... for a minute or two, and finally either a blue
screen error announcing "unable to write to drive C: data or files may
hah! ) be lost, or else it will simply reboot.
Once when trying to restart immediately opon boot I saw a black screen with
the ominous pronouncement "HDC error"
I have run the most throrough scandisk possible, and sometimes it finds and
fixes errors, sometimes it reports no errors.
Any ideas? You think the Hard Disk controller is flaky or is maybe the HDD
itself going?
I have a retired 4GB HDD which I may try for a while.
IF the HDD is bad, does anyone know which brand drives are silent? My
current one seems to park the head after every write and it is most
annoying. Clickety-tick, clickety-tick. I always thought the Toshiba 810MB
original L50 drives were smooth and silent.
Thanks
