Paul,
see my earlier post: what's in the lib is only there to look after charging
the lithium cells and converting the output of the cells into the
appropriate internal voltages - at a guess, 5v, 2.3-3.3 v, 12v, -12v, etc.
The lib will only recognise an external supply if it hits 15v. However, once
it's recognised it, it will cheerfully run on a lower voltage, down to
around ten volts or so - this probably differs depending on individual
machines. What happens when the input volts drop below a critical level is
that the machine starts using the internal batteries...but because it thinks
it's got an external power supply it won't tell you, and when the internal
battery is exhausted it will fail silently - no beeps, no hibernation, no
warning.
