Heya Dan,
I wasn't sniping at you in the other comments regarding power supplies etc
:) It's one of those things...if you do it, it will probably work ok...but
it might blow first time. In particular, I'd expect to find older cars to be
worse than more modern ones though in both cases, the cig lighter is usally
wired straight from the fusebox...
I very rarely use mine in the car - when I do, I have a car->12v dc
converter from a previous laptop which I use with the kicker to get it to
start. It's around 80-90% efficient IIRC. I'm waiting for someone to produce
a decent car radio which can read data cds with mp2/3 files as well as
normal CDs (it has to have DAB, with intelligent default to RDS FM, as well,
and it has to cost no more than a couple of hundred quids!)
My background is broadcast engineering, where I expect to design equipment
with 15-20 year lifespans, so like most of my colleagues I tend to be a very
conservative designer. I don't run things near their power ratings if I can
possibly avoid it :)
THe lib gets used all round the world on my travels, including use as an
oscilloscope/signal generator and network debugger, and I write code on it
too...
