Subject: Re: Nuts and bolts of impoving LCD brightness

A few years ago, there was lots of talk about this.

Man & Machine somewhere back east did the upgrades. Applied sheets of the 3M
microsphere reflective sheeting behind the LCD panel to reflect more of the
incoming light back out and thus increase the brightness of the panel a bit
more than usual. Made things a bit more sunlight legible, but not that much
more.

However, don't expect it to get that much brighter. The Libretto panel will
simply hover around the 100cd level and that's about as good as you'll get.

Some companies out there probably sell compatible 6.4" LCD panels nowadays or
at least something similar. Don't know if case mods would be needed, but
certainly there are brighter LCD color panels produced today due to better
lights, controllers, power converters, etc.

If you've got a really good EE brain, it's a matter of dropping in a brighter
bulb, wiring in the power converter and electronics to handle it, modifying the
case to hold it all (maybe not if you can squeeze it in), and off you go.
After all, the brightness of the panel really mostly just depends on the
brightness of the light source of the panel anyways.
