The only way you can make a transmissive system brighter is to get more light through it. If the outside light is massively brighter than the screen, you won't see anything - the extra light reflects off the front of the screen with enough energy to swamp the transmitted light. I'd guess than any front filter would work to reduce reflection. I have difficulties seeing how a reflective filter *behind* the image layer would work - if it's supposed to be reflecting sunlight back then the only way for that light to get there in the first place is through the front of the screen, where it has all sorts of chances to reflect and flare. Maybe we should try cutting a hole in the lid and positioning a small reflector to shine neat sunshine in through the back?
