Well I'm going by the fact that in really bright sunlight, I can sorta make out what I'm typing on the screen based on what small amounts of sunlight make it to the back of the LCD, reflect off whatever is there (presumably used to diffuse the light from the bottom-light) then back out the front. I'd imagine putting even a normal piece of paper there would make a big difference ... in fact, as I recall Canon or Sharp used to make a laptop where you could slip the back panel of the screen off, put it over a normal OHP and turn it into a data projector ... as far as I know they only used a normal LCD panel with a separate backlight module.
