Try changing the colour depth (so there are a different number of bytes per pixel and see if it changes...if it does, then it's definitely a memory problem. In windows, if there is a problem with the memory it will drop down to the minimum configuration (16 colours) as a default; linux is more forgiving and will try to display what you tell it to. On a 50/70 the video memory is on the bottom of the motherboard by the pcmcia slot and I have successfully resoldered it on a previous occasion. Flexing the board gently may enhance/reduce the problem, which sould be another confirmation. I don't believe that there is a problem with the video ocnnection but it's always possible...
