Yeah, it's because of older technology which accesses the chips
serially instead of in parallel.
For those who do not understand that, serial is when only one stream
of 1's and 0's are going to one chip at a time. But in parallel, it writes
using 8 or more lines to that same number of chips simultaneously. So the
chips aren't any faster, that just better manage it. But many of the newer
chips are better with them taking parallel inputs.

I have a true 2.5" 256mb Sandisk Solid State drive, it has a metal
bracket, mounting screws, etc. I got it from a guy who bought a bunch of
them from a dot-com here in seattle. They were trying to develop an
internet appliance of their own, but never got past the alpha stage. At the
auction, a guy bought a box of misc parts. When I asked how much he'd want
for those 250mb laptop drives, he said "eww, 250mb, here you can have then
for $2 each." I had no complaints. =D
I got 4 of them and they got into lots of stuff here from some
i-openers to a web player to my libretto 20. Everyone has a killer buy in
their life, one where they get an outrageously good deal on something. That
was my good deal. I just wish that I could have used those life points on a
better deal. :/
Oh well, I just have to hang out on ebay. =D
