OK here are some tests I've performed on my 2 SmartMedia cards - an Olympus 8 meg card
and a no-name-brand 64 meg card. These tests involve copying a 5,203,586 byte file
(povwin3.exe, the latest public distribution of POV-Ray for Windows 3).

Test 1, 64 meg card in camera:
* 64 meg SM card in my Olympus C-200 Zoom (D-510 to you NTSC people) attached to my
desktop (AMD Athlon XP1600+ with VIA root USB hub, connecting through the camera's USB
interface through the USB hub in my Microsoft Natural Pro keyboard).
- Copying from hard drive to 64 meg SM card in the camera takes 14.5 seconds from
start of copy to when the camera's activity light stops (Windows reports the copy
finished in a fraction of a second).
- Camera interface was 'stopped' and camera unplugged and replugged to make sure
buffers were flushing.
- Copying from 64 meg SM card in camera to the desktop takes 9 seconds from start of
copy to when Windows reports file copied and camera's activity light stops.

Test 2, 8 meg card in camera:
* 8 meg SM card in my Olympus C-200 Zoom (D-510 to you NTSC people) attached to my
desktop (AMD Athlon XP1600+ with VIA root USB hub, connecting through the camera's USB
interface through the USB hub in my Microsoft Natural Pro keyboard).
- Copying from hard drive to 8 meg SM card in the camera takes 15 seconds (same
conditions as above)
- Camera interface was 'stopped' and camera unplugged and replugged to make sure
buffers were flushing.
- Copying from 8 meg SM card in camera to the desktop takes 9 seconds (same conditions
as above)

Test 3, 64 meg card in SM card reader in libby:
* 64 meg SM card in my SimpleTech (read: Generic) SmartMedia to PCMCIA adapter
inserted into the lower slot (slot 0) of my L100 (non overclocked) running Windows 98
with 64 meg RAM on full power and the default PCMCIA IDE/ESDI drivers.
- Copying from hard drive to 64 meg SM card in reader takes 8.8 seconds from start of
copy to when Windows reports the copy is done (and CPU activity associated with
accessing the SM card stops).
- Card was stopped and ejected then re-inserted to ensure no buffering.
- Copying from 64 meg SM card in reader to the libby takes 9 seconds (gee this is
getting to be a pattern eh?)

I was going to perform test 4 (same as test 3 but with the 8 meg SM card) but I must
have done something wrong at some point because now the camera doesn't want to know
about it! Looks like I'll be making a trip back to the camera store for a warranty
claim :-/

But anyways there you go ... as far as I could tell there was virtually zero time
difference between copying stuff to and from the SM cards as far as the camera was
concerned despite the smaller one being a 'name brand' and the larger one being a
'no-name' brand.

It'll be interesting to see what other people come up with ....
