Nah the 'speed' of the lens (if I'm not mistaken) is related to the raw light gathering power (the more light, the faster you can set the shutter for the same exposure) ... really simplistically speaking, for similar lenses a larger front lens (assuming the stuff behind it can gather light coming through it) will result in a faster lens than a smaller one ... thats why sports photographers have those insanely large lenses that are 5 times larger than the camera itself.
