You mean nothing's absolute!?  Darn.  Actually, I suppose I could/should have 
guessed that there are too many variables associated with wireless to expect 
definitive answers.

OK, got it - is that what they're called at my neighborhood computer store?

My life needs changing, but the combination of spousal non-sympathy and 
unemployed status may preclude the cable install, at least for the time 
being.  I have digital phone lines (not DSL, just digital service) and can 
get a reported 53,333 bps at connection and upwards of 48,000 bps afterwards, 
as indicated by various web site-based measurements.

My strategy here is to get wireless, then when all the cables disappear the 
wife will be so happy she'll sign off on the cable install!

So an upstairs base location inside a 2000-ft2 frame house should let me surf 
with the Libretto downstairs, most likely?
