I think there is, but it requires that you have a cd drive to make use of it. Can't
remember if this is the one or I am remembering for the 110.. It could be me..

If one uses a proper bootdiskette one can with great success comment out the scsi
sections of the config.sys nd autoexec.bat files ;)

Or fdisk /MNR, then sys C: and if that fails try installing over the previous
instalaltion, if anything was missing it will be repaired, if on the other hand there
is a virus, the best thing to do is to discard the current setup, format the disk (/Q
to make it fast). Whenever I find myself starting over I do this.

I boot up and load "XMSMMGR 2048" from the cd insatllation directory, then I wipe the
disk using either "deltree /Y C:\" if I remembered to put that on the boot floppy I
use. Or I use "format C: /Q" to make a quick format of the drive.

Then I issue these commands
md c:\w98uk2
c:
cd w98uk2
copy X:\system\*.*
md vga
md audio
md zoom
md 3com
(here I copy the contents of the driver floppies for these devices onto the
harddrives subdirs. using copy A:. vga, or the contents of the driver directory for
Windows 98 on the cd for the device. Zoom is my wireless lan card, 3COM my network
card)

I start the installation of windows. And go through it. And choose standard stuff.
Upon 2nd boot I install the drivers, and after booting up again I install
TotalCommander (used to bne WinCommander), and set up to have TweakUI for Windows 98
- powertoys, autologon to the network, set display preferences to have no animated
windows, and no autoplayback of cds in the cd drive.

Those are the basics. I leave all the instalaltion files on the disk in the \win98uk2
directory, and preserve the structure.

After that I can go about installing software and insert any data I have backed up
prior to starting over.

When All is done I usually make a ghostimage of the C: drive.
Usually my C: drive is set to 1500MB but on some systems where I will be using more
software I set it to 2GB.

The last thing I install is antivirus software, which is then updated and s scan is
made, I never bother system emergency floppies, as everything I need including data
files less than 24 hrs old are on my network. Which of course is also antivirus
protected - on a machine that never reboots, and when it is is thoroughly scanned.

Indeed it is slightly speedier.

I find that if I need to format C: then I won't be using any files on the computer in
question but load from CD or equivalent from my server. There usually is a reason why
software fails.
