Might I note that transferring from one (slow) laptop drive to another
(slow) laptop drive will never be Fast(tm)..  this is just my opinion,

certainly not enough to really utilize a 100mbit LAN connection.. why
would a switch make any difference except speed auto-negotiation..

No, I REALLY don't believe a crossover cable is "limited" to 10mbit,
I think you may just need to explicitly set each card on each end of
that cable to use 100mbit ONLY.. don't let it auto-negotiate, that may
be your problem.. but as I also noted, you may not see a lot of an
improvement from HDD->HDD .. that's most of your bottleneck.

Think about it, add anything in the middle of your connection, how
could it possibly make it faster?  you're adding distance, latency,
more processing time.. etc.

No ideas about this specific card.. I'm throwing out general ideas here,
they may be of more use to you than tech support for your hardware,
which sounds like it is functioning fine, as far as discontinued old
laptops go ;)
