Actually I think you'll find crossovers can do 100Mbps full duplex (I know for a fact that crossovers going switch to switch go full duplex, straights from switch to NIC go full duplex, I find it real hard to believe crossovers going NIC to NIC don't go full duplex). Bear in mind though that the hard drive actually goes slower than the switch (your Libretto hard drive controller has a maximum logical transfer rate of 33Mbps HALF duplex and your hard drive has a physical transfer rate of perhaps half that depending on if you've had it upgraded).



The only thing I could guess was that maybe the 10/100 LED would change from yellow to green when a 100Mbps connection is made. I was guessing a that because the other 2 LEDs only glow green.

It's possible that due to other limitation the connection is 100Mbps but the computers may not be transferring data faster than you are seeing. Any number of components could be causing a bottle neck.

Another thing may be a mismatch or compatibility problem between the network adapters (we had Xircom Realport NICs that had no end of trouble connecting straight to Bay Networks Accelar switches with 100Mbps cards (and which other NICs manage 100Mbps full duplex easily) and we could only get them going at 10Mbps half duplex, but plug them into a Bay Networks 450 and they go at 100Mbps full duplex, for instance).



But I guess that LED being on only means the card is >capable< of a 100Mbps connection, and isn't actually monitoring or testing the connection. It sure isn't detecting the crossover cable or bothering to turn the LED off if it is.

Be sure to check the driver settings, you may need to set the driver to operate at 100Mbps.

Another thing to check is see what the operating system is saying about the speed (WinNT/2k/XP will tell you in the properties of the network connection once it's up, I think 98 does it as well).



I'm not quite sure were to go from here to find out why I'm not getting faster transfers through this new LAN switch than I am with just a crossover cable.

This may be as good as you can get from you combination of hardware.

In general, a switch will be no faster than a crossover between 2 computers AS LONG AS THE CROSSOVER IS IN GOOD CONDITION. I've seen/had plenty of network issues that I've traced down to dodgy cables such as NICs getting stuck in 10Mbps, this will happen if the network is of poor quality, incorrect standard (eg. CAT3 instead of CAT5) or has broken connectors, regardless of if it's straight or crossover.
