Matt, crossover cable is the fastest way to connect the PCs, and 4.7Mb/s may be as good as it gets with old laptop. Switch actually may slow things down- in theory, but not in your case. If the cable has at least 2 pairs of wire, it should be capable of full duplex. Duplex mismatch because of a failed autonegotiation is a common problem, so you may want to try to set both cards to 100Mb Full duplex manually.
