i have no desire to start a distribution holy war, but there seem to
be two competing packaging formats now, rpm (redhat) and debian
(uh... debian), both of them gpl'ed.  someone else will have to speak
for debian, as i don't know anything about it.  as for rpm, it already
has a structure of groups into which programs fit; i'll attach it
below.  if you use rpm packages, it's easy to fit the art programs
into Applications/Grapics, Applications/Sound,
Applications/Publishing, etc., and there are already rpms available
off the net for most major programs (saves you a lot of trouble).  if
you're looking to put together a complete distribution, you can just
grab the free parts of redhat (i think metro-x is the only non-free
part), add art program rpms to it, and hack up some sort of install
for them (or just tell people to go into glint and look at the
available packages).  the biggest problem would probably be getting x
setup nicely/easily for everyone unless you licensed a commercial x
server like metro-x or accelerated-x.
