I'm another Debian user and am quite pleased with the Debian packaging
system. As far as dselect, I've grown to like it now that I'm comfortable
with it. However, I still use dpkg (for which dselect is a friendly front
end) for small modifications and additions to my system. It's my
understanding that there is a new and friendlier package manager being
worked on. I think it's called deity. There's also been some talk on
the Debian lists about creating a simpler installation that would consist
of choosing between a few fixed configurations, instead of the current
method which has you choose individual packages - precisely to make it
easier for newbies. Actually, I don't think it would be difficult at all
to created a custom Debian installation. All you'd have to do is decide
what packages should be in it and then write either a perl or shell script
to invoke dpkg on that list.
