Yeah, it really is a whole new language. It's not that tough, though--if
I can learn it, you can.

I'd start with a couple of good books. James Newton's book "Director
Shockwave Studio Developer's Guide" has some good chapters on 3D. Paul
Catanese has an excellent book too, "Director's Third Dimension:
Fundamentals of 3D Programming in Director 8.5". 

It looks like James Newton's book has been remaindered. It's selling on
Amazon for as little as 87 cents.
