Well, also being from Europe myself, I'm quite familiar with those numbers, and I don't see why they in themselves should cause the problems you describe, apart 768*576 is maybe so bug, it's overtaxing your playback-videosystem, but that would probably show as tearing. I dunno', I just think I've tested with doubling myself, and been pleased with upsampled results.
