I managed a team of programmers in China (Beijing) for a while, and believe me, I understand why people would hesitate to fork out 1/4 of their annual income for one software package. It was a major chunk of cash even for the company they worked for, and it was a BIG company. It looks like a problem without a happy solution. You really hit the problem areas in your post, and I find it difficult to improve on your assessment. I wish I could suggest an answer that solved all the legal, ethical, and moral issues, but I'm just a programmer, not Solomon. I tend to defend Macromedia's position because I believe we're all stake holders. The more copies of Director Macromedia sells, the more they have to spend on further development. That benefits us all--for better or worse, we've hitched our careers to Macromedia's star, and the better they do, the better we do.
