To do it from Director, you'd probably have to use Glen Picher's BinIO Xtra and bury yourself fairly deeply in the QuickTime file spec for a long time to pull it off. Neat and fun to do? Yes, in a perversely geekish way. Commercially worth the time spent? I'm dubious. There's a supposedly cross-platform scripting language/tool like unto AppleScript that might be useful. I've never messed with it and I've forgotten it's name at the moment, but it is regularly mentioned on the various AppleScript lists.
