I actually agree that changing the user's resolution is a bad idea.
My argument before was that if you are going to change the resolution
anyway, then changing the refresh rate to something that makes the
overall scan rate acceptable to most monitors would be a good
addition.
As for what scan rates can work with the monitor, I don't think the
system can know (at least on PCs). On Macs there is a certain amount
of checking that can go on, based on sense information from the
monitor, so you'll find two choices on Macs, one list of recommended
rates, one for all rates. I don't think that Windows knows for sure
what rates the projector is capable of.
