Ok, I've made a simple movie that shows the difference between 
Director and Flash JPEG rendering. Take a look at this:

Click anywhere to toggle between the two demos. The first screen 
looks the same, both corner images are as good as each other, until 
you set 256 colors. When you do that, the lower right one (the Flash 
sprite) becomes much nicer (either reload the page or go to the 
second screen and back before judging the results).

The second screen shows the sprites at larger than normal size, and 
you can see that the lower right one is much nicer again, at any bit 
depth.

Make sure to go to the other screen and back again after doing a 
color depth change, otherwise the sprites won't render as well as 
they can.
