I thought about a way to do this recently, but didn't find time to
try it out. I just did, and it seems to work well:

There's a feature of QuickTime members where you can set the mask of
the member to a bitmap. If you do that, video only shows on the stage
that correspond to pixels that are not white in the bitmap. The
member can remain direct to stage, and get good performance, but can
be an irregular shape.

The shape can include say a big hole in the middle, and you can put
sprites in that area without them being blasted out by the DTS video.
If you put the bitmap over the video that you can see, it gets
obliterated, which proves that the DTS is still working. If you place
a bitmap half over the irregular shaped video, the half that is over
will be replaced by the video, but the other half is still solid and
visible.

What this means is that you could do an effect like having an
irregular shaped frame to the video (for example, if you wanted to
have an angled view of a TV) just by putting the surrounding bitmap
on top of the QuickTime sprite, and setting the mask of the QuickTime
member to a bitmap that is black where the you want the video to show
through.

You'll have to play with the regpoint of the mask member to get the
mask lined up to match the surrounding bitmap.

Let me know if I didn't explain that too clearly!
